1. I’ll start with the end of the week and the glorious protests in the US and around the world. Over 12 million turned out in the US. We were in Seattle. Huge turnout and entirely peaceful. This link is to a timelapse video someone took from their apartment downtown.
Another reason I’m proud of our city is this – police officers work with activists to make sure it was safe. Now this is how it’s done– provided you are not intentionally trying to provoke violence (like Trump sending Marines and NG to LA when protests were peaceful and absolutely no one wanted them there).
“Seattle Police Outreach and Engagement Team (POET) officers took time to connect with organizers in advance and during the large event, ensuring the route was safe and clear. Repeatedly throughout the day, people stopped officers to thank them or ask about POET, a group of around 10 specially trained SPD officers that provide enhanced cooperation, conversation, and coordination with the community.”
2. From Hilary Clinton: “California Governor Newsom didn't request the National Guard be deployed to his state following peaceful demonstrations. Trump sent them anyway. It's the first time in 60 years a president has made that choice. Trump's goal isn't to keep Californians safe. His goal is to cause chaos, because chaos is good for Trump”. Truth
3. The Trump Administration is sharing footage from 2020 to make the situation in L.A. appear more chaotic than it is. (Alt National Park)
4. I absolutely love this Los Angeles man speaking directly to the National Guard. (Also, on social media an awful lot of women are swooning.)
5. The President called for the arrest of a duly elected Governor because he didn’t want Trumps interference/provocation/political theater in his state. (Axios, ABC News, USA Today) This is insane. Also, The President of the United States of America called Governor Newsom “Newscum”. Why are Christian Republicans okay with this kind of behavior?
6. 200 Marines are being sent to Los Angeles—deployed on U.S. soil, against American civilians. (Reuters, CBS News, Military Times) Further, it appears they were sent without fuel, food, water or a place to sleep, or apparently, pay. (Military.com, Axios, Yahoo News) I thought this was nuts when I saw the report but from what I can tell from multiple sources, it is true.
7. Trump in 2020: “We have to go by the laws. We can't move in the National Guard. I can call insurrection but there's no reason to ever do that, even in a Portland case. We can't call in the National Guard unless we're requested by a governor.”
8. RFK announced via a Wall Street Journal opinion piece that he is removing all 17 members of the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, which is the expert panel at the CDC that decides who is eligible for vaccines and whether insurers should cover them. (WSJ)
9. This is a good post from someone who actually lived under Martial Law – in Thailand.
10. Trump made a speech at Fort Bragg in which goaded American soldiers into booing the media and his “enemies” including Governor Newsom and former President Biden. He also lied nonstop. He also sold “merch”. (CNN, The Guardian, ABC News) It’s not just that it’s distasteful, highly inappropriate, and against actual military regulations, it’s also dangerous. You don’t politicize the military and coax them to take a side against American people.
11. Good News Alert: HHS reinstates more than 450 CDC employees fired in April reorganization, including childhood lead poisoning team. What the hell was this all for other than to intentionally hurt government workers and their families and create unending chaos?
12. From Andy Borowitz: “I swear I am not making this up. Tonight Trump will go to the Kennedy Center to see “Les Miserables,” a play about a mass uprising against a tyrannical king. I hereby retire from satire.”
13. Trump said that Newsom has caused a lot of deaths during the protests. Except that absolutely no one has died.
14. Senator Padilla handcuffed and thrown to the ground after being forcibly removed from Noem press conference. Administration officials said he didn’t identify himself and that he lunged at the podium. (Politico, MSNBC, BBC) And millions of MAGA repeat the claim even though there is video showing what actually happened. The alternative news universe they live in is a choice.
Noem also said she didn’t know who he was. But he’s a US Senator and the ranking member of the subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, and BORDER SECURITY. So she is either lying, stupid, or very bad at her job.
15. Noem says the Federal Government is going to stay in LA to “liberate the people from their socialist and burdensome government.” She really said this. Can you imagine what would happen if a Dem Admin said this about Texas? Or Florida? It also reminds me of when Russia was saying they were going into Ukraine to “liberate them”. Please, “the beatings will continue until morale improves” I guess.
16. Israel bombed Iran’s Nuclear facilities killing at least 9 scientists. Trump first said he didn’t know about the plan. Israelis said he did know about the plan. Then he said in fact he did know about the plan and tried to claim credit for it. Also, reports indicate Israel is saying that Trump approved of the attack privately, while claiming publicly he was against it. (Yahoo, AXIOS, Reuter, CBS News) It’s impossible to keep up when someone lies like they breath.
17. Here is a video of a soldier refusing to support Trump and ICE raids. Perusing social media it appears a whole lot of soldiers want no part of this – the ICE raids, going after protestors, and Trump’s parade. They are being used and they know it.
18. Police in DC arrested several veterans for protesting the (stupid) parade, including handcuffing an 80 year old veteran with a walker.
19. Look, if there is enough money for this stupid parade – that the military doesn’t even want – there is enough money restore the DOGE cuts to the VA.
20. ICE conducted its largest workplace enforcement operation in Nebraska since President Trump took office, arresting more than 100 undocumented immigrants at Glenn Valley Foods in Omaha. Tax paying, working people who are not eligible for the programs funded by their taxes. Working people. NOT VIOLENT CRIMINALS as we were promised. (Nebraska Examiner) BTW, did they arrest the owner for hiring these workers? Of course not. Good people torn from their families and communities so Trumps deportation numbers look good to his base.
