"War-ravaged" Portland

Here goes..
1. The President of the United States of America shared a bizarre AI video that is depicting a grand announcement by Trump of a new healthcare system called Med Bed. Apparently among the Q-anon Folks and other super wacky conspiracy theorists the government has these MRI-like machines that cure all illness – will even grow back limbs. No, I am not kidding. They think the government is keeping it from the people. Well, in this ***FAKE*** video, Trump is the hero announcing to the country that everyone will have access now. Jake Tapper (CNN) did a short bit from his home on it. Trump (or someone) took the fake video down later. (CNN, MSNBC, USA Today).
This is bonkers. Also, imagine having terminal cancer or having a loved one with terminal cancer – you are desperate – and the President is sharing a post saying cancer can be cured by this machine – and it’s all fake. Fake.
2. In this week’s edition of DO NOT TAKE MEDICAL ADVICE FROM DONALD TRUMP, Secretary of Health and Human Sacrifice, RFK, has Trump believing that Tylenol (or acetaminophen) causes autism. (Axios, NPR, BBC, etc.,) This is nuts of course and every reputable source for medical information came out strongly to clarify that there is no evidence for this. (Nature, Yale School of Public Health, Autism Science Foundation). But Trump likes the thoughts in his own head best and is telling women not to take Tylenol during pregnancy. They should only take it if “they can’t tough it out” (yes, he said that). Tylenol taken while pregnant does not hurt the baby in utero. You know what does? A high fever, which we all know (well those of us who have not lost our damn minds) that acetaminophen is an excellent fever reducer.
3. Five mass shootings in just over 24 hours, horrible jobs numbers, drastic cuts to healthcare and cancer research, a government shutdown looming, and this is what Trump is posting about. (Well, this and medical programs that don’t exist.)

4. This 22-year-old (Adam Mockler, Media Touch Network) keeps it real. It’s good (and short). And he nails Scott Jennings (CNN) which by itself is awesome.
5. Trump sent a directive to law enforcement that they should consider people who have anti-capitalism, anti-Christian, anti- American views as potential terrorists.
6. A guy (Thomas Jacob Sanford) with giant American flags on his truck, rammed said truck into a Morman church, opened fire, and then set the church on fire. Four people were killed. (ABC News, NYT, CNN, BBC). Again, before we even knew the suspect Trump blames the “radical left”. Yeah, because we are always driving around town with giant flags on our trucks.
7. Trump is really enjoying sending ICE and military into big cities. In this case Portland. He says, “"I spoke to the governor, she was very nice," Trump said. "But I said, 'Well wait a minute, am I watching things on television that are different from what's happening? My people tell me different.' They are literally attacking and there are fires all over the place...it looks like terrible." He’s calling it “war-ravaged” on social media. “His People” are showing him things that are not happening. Fox News showed a video from the 2020 protests, and he thought it was current. (The Guardian) So now we have soldiers marching in the streets. Nobody needs or wants them. They are inciting conflict.
For Portland’s part, they are mostly responding as you might expect (which if you know Portland means weird and funny. But also, resolved).
Where there are clashes, it is mostly being provoked by the presence of military in full tactical gear marching through the city for no reason. Portlanders rightfully resent this. They didn't want it. They didn't need it. Again, just like Chicago, there has been a drastic decrease in crime. But Trump wants his base to think he's a tough guy. The problem is he has millions of people across the country actually believing his lies, thinking the incredibly beautiful city of Portland - always on the "best cities to live in" lists - is scary, violent, "war ravaged". Tyrants rule by terrifying people.
8. The top 10% now hold 67.4% of all the wealth in the US. The bottom 50% hold 2.5%. (CBO)
9. YouTube is settling (aka caving) a lawsuit for $24.5 million, by Trump for suspending his account after the J6 riots. (Politico) He lied about the presidential election for months, then he tried to interrupt the peaceful transfer of power by whipping up his base. They and many other social media companies suspended him because he was a threat to national security, to our very democracy. Our major media organizations are almost all failing us. They are private companies. They are allowed to have policies regarding conduct on their sites. For example some of the folks got their accounts suspended for spreading misinformation during a pandemic – you know – getting people killed. But they are capitulating.
10. MAGA went to the Ryder Cup golf tournament and embarrassed the rest of us yet again. This is that “ugly American” thing talked about outside of the US. Just embarrassing.
11. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 was a landmark bill that forbid racial discrimination in housing. Two whistleblowers from HUD raised alarms that Trump was weakening fair housing protections, violating the law. So of course, they were fired. Trump famously was sued by DOJ in the 1970s for refusing to rent apartments to Blacks (violating the Fair Housing Act). He literally had employees put a “c” for “colored” on their applications. (WaPo, The AP, PBS).
12. There is a lot to say about Secretary of Defense Pete Kegseth’s bizarre speech to our military generals and admirals. A man who quit the National Guard after being flagged by fellow soldiers for his white supremacist tattoos, spent millions of dollars wasting the very valuable time of all of our Generals and Admirals, just to be a condescending prick to them. Again, just embarrassing. And such a waste.
For his part, 5-time draft dodging Trump suggested that the military use big American cities as training grounds – once again calling Democrats the “enemy from within” that we are “at war with”. The quote, “Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, the US’s ‘most dangerous cities’, should be used as ‘training grounds’ by the military”. Just imagine any other president saying this. He also complained that the Generals weren’t clapping for him. And of course, he lied incessantly
13. Retired Army Lt. General Mark Hertling on Pete Hegseth's speech: "Once again I’m reminded, trust is gained in drops and lost in buckets."
14. Also, during the speech Kegseth says hazing is coming back, change the rules of engagement, drill sergeants can put their hands on recruits and implies the military will go easy on sexual assaulters ("No more frivolous complaints, no more anonymous complaints, no more repeat complaints, no more smearing reputations," Look, there is a reason most woman don’t report. This shit is why. Go ahead and listen to the speech and tell me I’m wrong.
15. Trump announced Pfizer will get three years of tariff relief for cutting a deal with him for TrumpRX. This is a state run extortion racket run by a dictator who will personally profit. Free Markets y’all!!
16. Republicans are mad that when undocumented immigrants go to the emergency room, we don’t just let them die.
17. Oh hey we LOST 32,000 jobs last month. (PBS, NBC News, CNN, WSJ)
18. “We are the most intellectual species to walk the planet, but we’re not intelligent. If you’re intelligent you don’t destroy your only home.”- Dr. Jane Goodall. Godspeed Jane Goodall.

19. Remember last week I told you about the 50 some boats from a dozen different countries trying to bring food aid to starving Gazans? Well, Greta Thunberg was on one of the boats and apparently Israel arrested her (for what exactly? Bringing food during a famine. Okay.) Israel is intentionally causing people to starve to death. That is a war crime.
20. ICE agents used Blackhawk helicopters to repel 300 agents onto apartment building in south Chicago. The neighbors said the noise was deafening and the buildings shook terrifying the entire neighborhood. They raided the apartment without warrants. Trump was not kidding when he suggested the military use our cities as training grounds. (Newsweek, CBS News, USA Today, Reuters)
Masked men dragged screaming children out of beds in the middle of the night, some were naked, separated them from their parents and zip tied. And we have conservatives like Scott Jennings (and others) making excuses for this. If you are making excuses for treating children like this you are ruled by your ideology, which has stripped you of your humanity. There is no excuse.
Americans (and non-Americans) in this country still have Constitutional rights, but we are very quickly losing them. They only exist if our government, law enforcement, and courts uphold them.
21. Trump continued his retribution tour this week by leaning on his AG to indict James Comey. If you will remember, the government prosecutors did not think there was a legit case against Comey so Trump fired them and installed someone more loyal to him. 42 judges penned a letter to express how this crusade by Trump is jeopardizing our freedom of speech rights.
22. Trump is trying to financially manipulate Universities to sign a pledge to commit to his ideological/political agenda. (CBS News, NYT, PBS) The “Thought Police” is closer than you think folks.
23. Doom scrolling break. So awesome. Get up early kids!
