The world: We need a ceasefire in Gaza! The U.S.: Yeah, no.

Here goes...

1. Journalists are being fired for stating Charlie Kirk’s own words. With pressure and manipulation from our own government, Entertainers are being fired for stating Charlie Kirk’s own words. Random people are being fired from their jobs for social media posts stating Charlie Kirk’s own words. Never again do I want to hear Republicans talk about free speech again.

I’ll also point out that Brian Kilmeade of Fox was not fired for literally saying the chronic homeless should be euthanized. “just kill ‘em.”

Here are Kirk’s own words on the subject of free speech: “Hate speech does not exist legally in America. There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment.” So, what is all of this about? Clearly it’s not about their love for Kirk.

Marco Rubio confirms he will look to revoke visas of individuals who make inappropriate remarks about Kirk. (CNN, Axios, The Hill)

By the way, private companies do have some leeway in firing employees for personal behavior when it violates their conduct rules. But the federal government saying it will pull FCC licenses of media companies it doesn’t like is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

2. Charlie Kirk was intimately involved in the insurrection on January 6th and lied about what happened that day incessantly. He pled the 5th 70 times when testifying at the J6 hearings. (Newsweek)

3. In this week’s version of “Why is JD Vance Such an Asshole?” Vance, hosted Charlie Kirks podcast after his death and, while saying he was supporting “civility” encouraged everyone to dox their fellow Americans if they celebrate Charlie Kirk’s death on social media. This is the Vice President of the United States of America stoking division and hatred, pitting Americans against each other, while pretending to care about civility. And again, their concern about free speech obviously only applies to speech from the Right.

You will be shocked to learn that a far-right organization immediately created a website cataloging all of the doxxing folks might do – creating lists of the offending people.

4. This clip is an example of the fundamental misunderstanding (or worse, the deliberate mischaracterization) of Affirmative Action from folks on the Right. In this case Vance and Kirk. But the (blatantly inaccurate) talking points serve them so they will never stop. It’s also a horribly racist thing to say about these successful Black women.

5. Trump is ordering the removal of information about slavery from multiple National Parks. (WaPo, CBS News, NYT). Because you know, if we don’t ever see things like this (pictured below), we can pretend slavery wasn’t all that bad. I mean white Americans shouldn’t be made to feel uncomfortable, right? Trump specifically wanted this photo removed. (Please read up on Germany’s approach to education after the Holocaust.) And guess what, the far right in Germany wants to change that too! (The Atlantic)

6. Trump on ICE officers: "They don't have to take it anymore. And they don't want to take it ... when they spit, you hit. Do whatever you want. You do whatever the hell you want." He’s encouraging police brutality. But don’t worry, no one will do anything, and Republicans don’t care.

7. Good News Alert: The transition away from fossil fuels may be happening faster than we think (fast enough? Don’t know). Climate fatalism pervades, but this article makes the case that that thinking is dangerous and perhaps deliberately perpetuated by the very companies that make $ from fossil fuels.

8. Oh my goodness this is getting absolutely silly – like, slapstick comedy wacky, a Don Rickles sketch, except that it is our government: Sen. Kennedy (at Epstein hearings) : "Who, if anyone, did Epstein traffic these young women to besides himself? "Kash Patel: "There is no credible information, none...that he trafficked to other individuals."

Okay.

9. The US Dollar just had its worst first-half collapse in 50 years. Down 10% since Trump took office. (Investopedia, NYT, ABC News)

10. Trump’s DOJ deleted a study from its site stating right-wing violence ‘continues to outpace all other types of terrorism & domestic violent extremism in the US. The study was available online until Friday before Kirk’s murder. (The New Republic, Yahoo News, NYT) Below is just one graph. There is a lot of data to support this.

11. So sick of having a president behave this way. We’ve all been desensitized to it.

12. Groceries are at a 3-year high because of Trump’s policies: tariffs, lack of farm workers (deportations and fear of such), climate change denial. (CBS News, CNN, CNBC, Texas Public Radio, and even Fox News)From r/centrist and TrueGrade respectively

Please note what was happening to inflation during the Biden Administration (dealing with a global economic collapse due to a pandemic), when all we heard about was the price of eggs.

13. Senate Republicans blocked the subpoena of big banks involved in moving Epstein’s money – despite the fact that Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan who attended a lunch with Senate Republicans before the vote, according to Politico, told reporters, “We regret any association with that man at all. And, of course, if it’s a legal requirement (the subpoena), we would conform to it. We have no issue with that.”

Republicans really, really, really, want us all to stop talking about Epstein.

14. A vaccine advisory panel appointed by RFK Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Sacrifice, voted 8–3 to end CDC guidance that allowed the combined measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV) vaccine for children under 4. (NBC News, Politico, CBS News)

15. “In the span of three days, Disney won five Emmys for Andor (a show about resisting fascism) and then suspended Jimmy Kimmel (for resisting fascism).” Casy Murphy on Threads.

16. In which Trump says that licensed media companies are not allowed to criticize him.

17. US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in GAZA – for the 6th time. (UN News)

18. Military personnel refused to fly armed planes to Isreal (not wanting to be a party to genocide), and were arrested.

19. Federal officers took 11 Democratic officials into custody inside a federal building in Lower Manhattan after the group demanded entry to Immigration and Customs Enforcement holding cells where migrants were being detained. (NYT, NBC News, Alt National Park). Now why do you suppose they did that? Any lawmaker, R or D, that wants to check on the conditions in these camps should be able to do so at any time.

In the words of Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton, "So what did I miss?"
