You are failing at life if you think this is the price of freedom.

Hey Folks, Hey Folks,

I am not restarting my blog. I “took a break” after 14 months of spending every weekend writing it. Then I remembered that I actually like having a weekend (I still work full time).

Basically, I was preaching to the Choir. I never changed the mind of anyone (anyone) who disagrees with me politically, regardless of my pristine logic and stellar writing skills . It’s like screaming at clouds without making any difference.

There are so MANY heinous things going on in this country that I could be writing about now. Just this week one of my conversations started like this – “Phew, so glad the LIVE-STREAMED PUBLIC EXECUTION has been cancelled.” Like….what the….

And then of course there is the up-coming midterms. I'm going to need a lot more medication.

But seeing all of the old, and really (really) stupid, arguments from gun nuts after the shooting in Oregon is crushing my brain. So, I’ve done a little writing on the subject (I’m basically talking to said gun nuts who will probably never read this but whatever. Maybe it will help you when you have to argue the subject.)

Thank you for indulging me.

Take good care,

Ginger

PS: Maybe instead of having a regular blog, I’ll just have a random rant. Y’all can unsubscribe if you need to.

LONG TIME GUN OWNER HERE (me - I case that wasn't obvious):

“Guns are just inanimate objects”. This is the oldest, tiredest, and frankly, dumbest thing opponents of gun laws say. (Frankly, it’s more disingenuous than dumb). Yes, Genius, EVERYONE, including the bleeding-heart tree-hugging liberals know that the gun does not pick itself up and pull its own trigger. In fact, YOU know that everyone knows that. But you’ve been so manipulated by the gun industry that you’ve almost convinced yourself that this is some kind of clever come back. It’s not clever. It’s dumb.

When we say "it’s the guns" - we mean there are too many guns in this country, and it is way too easy to access them. Simple as that. Stop with the “it’s just a tool”. No shit! It’s a highly lethal tool that almost anyone can get their hands on in this country. THAT’S the problem.

And if you genuinely think the government is coming after our guns you are a hysterical child. The fear mongering from the gun profiteers has made you irrational. Given the saturation of guns here and their increasing lethality it is just silliness to think the government is going to try to come take them. Snap out of it!

In no other country are there 45,000 gun deaths per year. And guess what, mental health crisis (including suicidal ideation) are not exclusive to the US (although right now most people in other countries legit think we have lost our effing minds – for so many reasons - and it’s hard to argue).

Washington just passed new gun laws and the gun owners here are whining like a bunch of spoiled toddlers. Guess what, I don’t mind waiting 10 days to get my gun. I don’t mind having a criminal background check before being able to buy a lethal weapon. I don’t mind having to do some kind of training. (My God the number of people with these “tools” on their bedside table and they have had no instruction in their use is absurd.)

It is NOT “punishing law-abiding citizens” to have a few rules in place that make our lives safer. We do it in every other context in life!

And don’t come at me with the tired, “well, what laws would have prevented this…” Lot’s of them! But you oppose ALL of them – regardless of their logic - and won’t even consider testing them to see if a few precious lives could be saved. The lives of others are not precious to you anymore.

For example. If a man consistently beats his wife because he’s too damn fragile to manage feelings of frustration and anger, he should not be trusted with a lethal weapon. If the police or courts get it wrong once in a while, that is just the consequence of imperfect people and systems – which is unavoidable. If a person is falsely accused of murder, we don’t get rid of laws prohibiting murder. That’s just weird logic.

“But we used to have shot guns and hunting rifles on racks in our trucks and it was no big deal.” True. And then some sick kid shot up a school, got famous, and it caught on. Something needed to be done. This is how society works. When terrible things happen, it is sensible to try to prevent them from happening again. Remember when some guy had a bomb in his shoe and then everyone had to take their shoes off to get through airport security?

And for the love of God do not bring up “Chicago”! Yet another tired (dumb) argument. You all know that places like Chicago get most of their guns from states (like Indiana) with lax gun laws.

And FFS stop saying “criminals don’t obey the laws”. Again, NO SHIT! This logic suggests that we should not have any laws at all (you know this). Why even have laws when someone won’t follow them? Really? Do you even hear yourselves? “Oh well, criminals are going to sell fentanyl, so why have any laws prohibiting selling fentanyl?”

“Yeah but – the mental health crisis…” You also know that other countries have a mental health crisis too. Gun violence to this degree does not happen anywhere else. Quit pretending you don’t know why or trying to cobble together silly arguments that don’t make sense. Easy access to guns is the only difference. Occam's razor, Folks.

Also, if you think that the problem is that we have such rampant, dangerous, mental health issues in this county, why on earth would you want guns to be so easy to get?

And one last thing on mental health, when are you going to agree to pay more taxes so we can properly fund mental health services? Spoiler alert: you aren't.

Okay another last thing: If you refuse to be in any way inconvenienced by gun safety laws, claim that its a mental health problem, and also refuse to pay more in taxes to fund mental health services, you are simply saying you simply don't care. There is no solution you are willing to try and you are fine with it. Kids (and others) can continue to die. You want what you want. Nice.

And do not bring up your constitutional rights with me. You don’t understand them and you apply them arbitrarily to benefit your personal preferences. You are not a constitutional scholar and neither am I but I'm pretty sure if the founders could see what is happening now they'd be horrified and saying, "Don't blame this shit us!" There is not a chance on earth they would thing this is just the price of freedom.

Do not tell me, “well, everyone just needs Jesus.” Sorry, you know that is not going to happen, and you do not get to dictate the religious beliefs of others. And guess what, a whole lot of fragile men who have given their hearts to Jesus have also murdered their spouse with a gun – because they were furious and it was JUST SO EASY with a gun.

In the end I can only conclude that it comes down to - you don’t want to be inconvenienced. And/or, you willfully accepted the brainwashing and fear tactics from the gun industry. All resulting in gun deaths being the LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH AMONG CHILDREN in our country (read that again!). You’ve argued against gun laws so hard for so long that you cannot recognize that you have created HELL on earth.

Stop letting the people profiting from this carnage manipulate you.

It really is okay to reflect on your long-held beliefs and say, “you know what, the damage is too much. The slaughter of children in classrooms on a regular basis is TOO MUCH. Suicide is too easy with the prevalence of guns and it's TOO MUCH (and you aren't going to pay for mental health services anyway)! Women being murdered by their partners because using a gun is so easy is TOO MUCH. Maybe I’ve been wrong about this” (I know- really hard to do – but possible).

If you want to oppose laws that ban guns, go for it! Shout it from the roof tops! But it really is okay to fervently believe that, AND agree that common sense laws that – while not eliminating the problem – could reduce the carnage - are needed. I say that knowing that at this point it feels like it is too late. Because the gun profiteers have manipulated so many people to cherish their guns more than 5-year-olds, there are more guns in this country than people. But how could giving up be an option?! It’s not.

I am a gun owner. I am a gun owner who can see the nonsensical arguments from other gun owners. I can see the fear mongering from the gun profiteers. I can think for myself, can assess risk, recognize the prevalence of utterly senseless tragedy, and accept rules that allow me to defend myself without ultimately contributing to the Hell we are currently living in.

It should not be this hard.
